Ok, so I had never seen the original Japanese version before until tonight! My dog is sick and was BEGGING me to watch it with him. What's a girl to do?? Not surprisingly, the movie rocked and was way better than the American version (although Samara is pretty damn creepy). Japanese horror as a whole is just a completely different feel and a completely different creepy. It's more grotesque? I'm not sure what I am trying to say here. This is just a cool horror story in general. I mean you've got your creepy lady with hair covering her face (except her eye sometimes which is like staring at you hardcore), you've got creepy video tapes and phone calls, you've got your creepy abandoned well situation with a woman's skeleton just vibing in the water...the list goes on. I also like the amount of subtle horror that can be exaggerated to make things even more disturbing. I guess I am thinking of the facial features in particular obviously meant to be super startling because you are not expecting the faces to be completely twisted like that. Finally, my favorite part about the movie (well I guess the story in general) is how to lift the curse. You gotta just keeping copying this tape like a virus!
Shudder rating: 4 out of 5 skulls (I AM SHOOK)
My rating: 5 out of 5 skulls (duhhhh)
