The Beyond (1981)
I'm gonna say it...wtf is this movie lollll like am I too dense or was this movie made to be that interpretative? I not only listened to a whole podcast on this movie and watched an explanation on YouTube, but I literally just watched it yesterday and still feel a little lost. This was one of the best Last Drive-In specials in my opinion and they explained the movie provides very little explanation. Things just are because they are. They didn't even go into Schweick's story at all even though his zombie form was a huge part of the movie. I am led to believe that he was performing some sort of dark magic along with Elizabeth to open the 7th gate of Hell. Why wasn't Elizabeth targeted? See, I was confused from the beginning which is never good. We jump 15-20 years into the future where Liza buys the hotel and the paranormal stuff starts happening. Figures with marbled eyes start appearing around the place and causes the painter to fall and get seriously injured. Joe the plumber comes in and the zombie version of Schweick rips his eyeballs out. Then this zombie version is put into an autopsy room with an EKG reader on his decomposed body?? Lollll then one of the funniest scenes happens where the wife is screams for her life at the site of a vat of chemicals. Like she could have moved so easily but instead fell victim and got the chemicals spilled all over her face in front of her daughter. The middle-towards the end part of this movie focuses on Liza and Dr. John (who met at a bar?) trying to make sense of what is going on. So am I honestly. The best part of this movie is the spider scene where you can clearly see the fake spiders mixed in with the real spiders...like why did they do that hahahaha. The end was sort of cool and poetic, but again, I wasn't entirely sure what went on. Dr. John and Liza end up in the basement of the hotel when they were getting attacked by zombies at the hospital. A voice fills the room and then their eyes go marble implying that they have been blinded just like the others. The landscape is what Schweick was painting in the very beginning of the film, and it looks like a perception of hell where it is just a barren land. This whole movie just seemed like a chance to do any special effects with props (which is fine, but the story lacked a bit). Overall, the movie was okay, but I am not sure if I would tell anyone they HAVE to see it. I feel like I needed to see more Lucio Fulci films (because I have a whole horror movie blog and all) so here I am!
Shudder rating: 4 out of 5 skulls
My rating: 3.4 out of 5 stars. Not a bad watch but didn't keep me captivated.
