Psycho (1960)
First of all, what an aesthetically pleasing movie. The film is beautifully done from start to finish and gosh...the cast if freaking hot. Normannnnn your mommy issues just do it even more for me! I bet you have daddy issues like me too. Some people go to therapy and some people cope by indulging and eventually engulfing the personality of their slightly incestuous mother. I feel like this had to be one of the biggest plot twists in horror for the 1960s. A man dressing in womans clothes AND killing people. Crazy times these are. Damn the girl's got guts though...to be stealing 40k like that?? I just looked up the modern equivalent of 40K and its about 400K! Alllll to run away with man and start a new life. Oh, girlie. We've all been there. Norman's "mommy" was just not havin her boy giving her the male gaze though. This movie shows the horrors of a couple things here. One of them being the horrors of isolation. It's emphasized many times in the film that he lives all alone "with his mother" in the house next to the Bates Motel. Isolation does a number on people (hence why isolation while being incarcerated is such a heated topic, random). The horror works in tandum with the horror of isolation: mental illness. It's clear that little Norman has more than just skeletons in his closet (or fruit cellar). He is clearly struggling with his mental health and doesn't know how to cope without the closeness of his mother. That is understandable to a certain age, but there is an age where the level of dependance on a parent becomes unhealthy. Sure, everyone should rely on their parents in some ways, but mayyyybe not to the extreme of Norman lol. I actually watched the show Bates Motel back in the day and now I want to rewatch that!
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 97% I couldn't find the star rating and I didn't really look that hard to be honest.
My rating: 4.7 out of 5 stars...truly such a good film
