Satan's Little Helper
What a fun (and very interesting) little film. I actually watched this as part of a Last Drive In special which made the film so much more fun to watch. Ok...the first thing we need to address. Why does the little brother want to marry his college aged sister?? Like this little kid, Dougie, legit gets mad and super jealous when she brings home a guy to the point of asking Satan to kill him?? Which is a bit confusing because he thinks that the Satan character (who is actually a serial killer) is doing all these acts as fake stunts. This becomes clear when his own dad is disemboweled in front of him later on in the film. So... maybe Dougie just wanted to at least scare his "competition". There are so many little weird, quirky parts of this film idk if I can even mention them all on here. What I really like about this film is that it actually had a good premise and good ending to it. I love the whole thing of the arsonist from high school dressing up in this legendary Satan get up, then dressing as Jesus, then dressing as the cop at the very end. The end is not so obvious. It isn't until you see the cop put that extra 6 on the door and hear the mom and daughter wonder why he isn't talking. Overall, this film will definitely be watched again this Halloween. This is the first time I watched the film and it has such a weird charm to it. I can see why this is a niche little classic. The characters are all so unique and the whole film just has a personality. There are some films where you can include every aspect of a good horror film, but it was just delivered in such an "empty?" way that it became mundane. This movie sort of did the opposite. I felt like they had a small budget, but a great cast and a lot of creativity so everything was a lot more memorable. The characters really do make a difference!
Shudder rating: 3 out of 5 skulls??? I expected at least 4...
My rating: 4 out of 5 skulls!
