The Exorcist (1973)
Another classic that still stands the test of time as far as its creep and shock factor goes. The only complaint I have about this movie is that I think it focuses on Father Karris too much. I get itttttt he's the exorcist and the story should definitely highlight parts of his life, but idk...there were parts that were pretty slow while focusing on his story. I think when I listened to the book, I found it more reasonable to go into his story because the book always provides more detail. The movie (although a long one) only has a certain amount of time to cover all of the story, and I wished almost the entire film was centered around Regan. BUT AGAIN, this movie is called The Exorcist not The Exorcism of Regan. I will say though that I like the character of Karris and his relationship with Merrin. I watched a brief recap on YouTube and it pointed out that they both had the same necklace (I think Karris' necklace was worn by his mother then possibly given to him) so it was "fate" that they met. The video also pointed out how many scenes incorporated subminimal images of Pazuzu. I had no idea that the face and statue were hidden in so many scenes! This movie did a lot of revolutionary stuff for being a 70s horror flick. The way they made Regan so vulgar and unhinged when ladies were supposed to be viewed as (and especially YOUNG ladies) more "proper". They did such a great job making Regan transition from a bright young Actress's child to a completely possessed being. The way they changed her whole physical appearance and the voice overs ugh just really great for its time. I didn't really pick up why Pazuzu chose Regan as a host, but I guess it sort of makes sense with how estranged she is from her father and having a very busy mother (even though she was super attentive). I can only speculate though. Maybe children in general are just easier (or maybe just more fun) hosts to inhabit. Do I ever cravvvvve to watch this movie? No not really. If it is on TV will I stop and watch absolutely. Will I pull out this classic I have on DVD during Halloween again this year. Probably!
