The Devil's Bath
I'm still in shock that this based off of real historical events. It makes sense though...religion really had everybody doing crazy things (still does today). With that said, this is one of the best movies I've seen. I was hooked the entire time. I mean, the movie starts off with a baby being thrown from atop a waterfall. This is a messsssed up movie. There is some gore, but the true horror is in the story. The fact that people convinced themselves that if they murdered a young child and confessed, they would get to die AND go to heaven?? Here I am depressed as all hell in a library writing this and I'm not killing little kiddies! Wolf was not helping the situation, but I def feel bad for his character. It was clear that his romantic interests lied within the same gender. Oof that wedding night scene was roughhhh. Dude had to turn her away and jack off to her backside (plus he was flirting with a guy out drunk on his wedding night!). Then the mom really tipped things over the edge. I would be mad as hell if this lady not only came into my house whenever she wanted but also criticized everything I did. I guess that's the stereotypical mother-in-law though? Idk I don't have one lol. This movie is so complex and actually very beautifully done. It really put you through what Agnes was going through and had a way of making you feel her emptiness in everyday life. I mean she had a lot going not great for her, but she really couldn't take it to the point where rat poison was a solution prior to shanking that kid in the neck. I think Wolf did try to care for his wife but was also so detached from her because his heart was not with her. I think Wolf wanted to want to care for her. It was sad watching him say goodbye to her. It was like a little boy figuring out his own feelings and what to do in the moment. Ok, but that scene where Agnes kills that little boy and tries to convince both of them that he was much better off in Heaven was brutalllll. Just the rawness of seeing that poor little kid literally fear for his life. I recommend this movie to everybody, but especially to those who are history geeks. As someone who deals with a decent amount of depression, I found this movie relatable in a lot of ways. Sometimes you really will do anything to escape.
Shudder rating: 4 out of 5 stars (I CAN'T BELIEVE IT DIDN'T GET THE FULL 5 STARS)
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars...amazing movie
