Chopping Mall

Hahahaha this movie is ridiculous and the epitome of the 80s where malls were the rage. The fact that this mall had deploy killer robots to keep it safe was the first comedic aspect of the movie. They already had full time security guards, and they were like, nope, we need robots literally capable of shooting lasers powerful enough to blow heads off. And yes, this was another classic teenage movie where all the couples get together and start making out/banging each other at any chance they get (hence why they are at the mall overnight anyways...wild mall partyyyy lol). I was watching a bit of history of this film and apparently it had sort of a hard time releasing because it looked like it was for kids at first lol. I mean the concept is sort of childish (like I can see this story in an older kid's book?) Idk how to feel about this movie because nothing was bad about it, it was just a little boring? They did a good job with some of the special effects for that time, but a mall robot murder story can only make it so far in the horror world. There is a reason that this is more of a cult classic/comedy of terrors! You watch it to see how ridiculous it is. I mean even the cheesy scene of the dudes loading up on ammo and the slow-mo walk with the weapons as they prepare the take on the Protectors (so cheesy!). If anything, this movie teaches kids not to have parties at the mall at night because there could be murderous bots on the loose ensuring the "safety" of its building. I feel like the mall made more of threat by introducing these robots than reducing any crimes! I just happen to come across this movie on another one of the Last Drive-In episodes, so I was like why not. There is only so much you can do with this plot, and I think they did the most with it! I don't have anything else to really add because nothing really happens except the least menacing robots to exist going berserk on some rowdy kids...classic.

Shudder rating: 4 out of 5 skulls

My rating: 3.2 out of 5 skulls (only because the Protector robots are sort of cute)
