House on Haunted Hill (1959)
But like...how did the lady not realize that her husband skeleton was a puppet...? Not only that...how did she fall into the vat of acid when the entire room was empty? Can you imagine backing away from a literal Micheal's Halloween prop only to fall into a vat of bubbly? I really think that scene made this movie a bit cheesy. Which is a shame because this movie stood the test of time from 1959 and was pretty well done. I think the intro with Vincent Price's head is so freaking cool for some reason. Just that old school horror vibe. Now let's get into it. Some parts I didn't like. One, I think that it was sort of weird that they didn't go more into the caretaker's brother death that occurred in the house? Unless I'm not remembering correctly? They also didn't really go into who the ghost caretakers were? I mean, yes, they were introduced but they kind of were just there?? Also, $10,000 for each person to witness a staged murder so she can run off with the doctor?? She's gonna be 50 grand short at the end of all of this?? Besides those little things though, this movie is a classic and just reminds me how beautiful black and white film is. I saw segments of the color version, and it just doesn't have the same film. Some movies are just meant to be black and white! You know what's kind of funny? As cheesy as the old lady on the obvious rolling cart rolling away was, I still found it kind of creepy! We have to remember that the resources during that time for cinema were very limited. I like the banter between Fred and Annabella too. The whole comedy of her having already tried to kill him for his money (no wonder he was prepared this time). I also did not predict the end the first time I watched it! Even before the whole acid vat incident, I was shook that Annabelle and the doctor had a thing! Lollll Vincent Price was so chill at the end just telling the guests that the guns have blanks and saying he knew he was going to get murdered then just walking away. Classic goodbye.
