Noroi: The Curse

Damn, there is A LOT going on in this movie! Another gem to add to my J-Horror collection and very highly ranked. This movie takes a couple or even a few times of watching to digest. There are so many stories of so many different people being captured in this "footage that is too disturbing for the public". I am a huge fan of found footage horror, and this movie did such a good job at making it not too cheesy and pretty believable. Let's start from the top where we are viewing the footage left by a paranormal investigator whose house was just burned down and wife just died. He starts out just interviewing a woman who says she hears baby noises nearby which leads him to visit a very off-putting gal who doesn't appear to have any newborns at home. I'm not going to go into every single story of every single person, but another key person in the story is the little girl, Kana. There is footage of her with a bunch of other kids doing these psychic ability tests and she is killing it. We find out later that she goes missing. Then there is the actress who investigates some spooky stuff with a couple of guys, and she becomes "softly?" possessed. Her and the paranormal investigator go to the lake where the town that did the demon ritual for Kagutaba. They believe if they do the ritual the demon might leave the body of the actress. She says she is ok, and she actually is I guess because she didn't die?? Then we have Hori...oh Hori. Sweet, Hori lol. He was along for the ride for some reason? He is known for seeing things that aren't there (aka schizophrenic). He plays a very pivotal role in the end. Ok, I'm going to fast forward to the reallll messed up parts. We learn that the off-putting lady in the beginning is actually the daughter of the priest who conducted the demonic ritual in that town. She became possessed by Kagutaba who used her to get a medium to ultimately resurrect him. That's where Kana comes in. I should also mention that the off-putting lady also worked as a nurse and performed illegal abortions. She did this to sacrifice to the medium (that poor little girl, Kana) so that medium would be able to resurrect himself truly. Kana was unfortunately killed in the process so we as the audience is led to believe that Kagutaba died too. However, a tape is delivered to a station showing that Hori had showed up the paranormal investigator's home and killed the boy that him and his wife adopted (the son that might not have been the son of the off-putting lady) with a rock. We temporarily see Kagutaba's face on the boy which makes us think that the demon is taking form in him now. The paranormal investigator's wife then pours gasoline all over herself and sets herself on fire. One of the most chilling endings to a movie in my opinion!

Shudder rating: 4 out of 5 skulls (I'm surprised it didn't get the full 5 skulls!)

My rating: 4.5 out of 5 skulls
