One Missed Call (2003)

The thing about J-Horror is that there is always a good plot twist. I feel like American horror is so predictable in a lot of ways where as J-Horror I really don't know what to expect next. We start off with Yumi getting a phone call from a deceased friend and her whole friend group starts getting calls from their future selves right before their death. As the movie goes on her friends are slowly being killed off one by one (they had all exchanged numbers at the restaurant). It's a paranormal force that causes the person who just died to dial their past self and give them a look into what is in store for them. The story attempts to find the root of the curse so her friend group can literally stop dying off and to save others who might be affected in the future. Again, this is one of my favorite stories in J-Horror because think the curse is emitted from a mother who is going through M-by proxy (I cannot spell out that whole disorder...the Gypsy Rose mom one), HOWEVER, we are later shown in the film that one of the little girls was injuring her sister to go to the doctor. The little girl is making all these damn things happen! Everyone thought that the mother had been abusing her children when, in fact, the older of the two children were inflicting the pain. I mean...it was a bitttt extreme to just leave her to die during her asthma attack, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't understand why she did what she did. The really messed up part was that Yumi was abused a child and gave the mother's corpse a hug and gave her the love only an abused kid could give. That unconditional love that feels so good to get approval from. The hug you always wanted from someone. She was able to show Yumi the true culprit to try and ultimately break the curse. The ending was a bit confusing (and did not seem to be a happy one despite the cheery music). Yumi seems to be possessed by the vengeful girl's spirit and is ready to kill Yamashita. She's got a knife and put some candy in his mouth...that could only mean one of two things.

Shudder rating: 4 out of 5 skulls
My rating: 4.3 out of 5 skulls (I mean for the story alone!)
