MadS

I liked this film, but I feel like it was like a more extreme remake of Jacob's Ladder (in someeee ways). The whole drug is used to advance soldiers backfiring bit is always a fun one. I think the actors did a good job at making all of their actions animalistic. I feel like the symptoms of taking this drug (that was laced with the party drugs Romaine and his friends were taking) included: self-harm, shiny eyes, cannibalism, and just very chaotic behavior in general. I do love how the movie starts though, and I wish we got more randos involved like the girl who was stabbing herself. It was clear that they were testing subjects and keeping them hostage as they are prone to being a danger to themself and others (not to mention the reputation of the study could be tarnished). My only complaint about this film is that there is no real climactic moment. The whole movie is basically following R and whoever else takes the laced drug. They do make it a fun ride, however, the story is a little lost. It's more of an action psychological thriller in some senses. R's friend (Anna?) gets incredibly influenced by the drug and actually gets violent on it. I really don't know what else to say about the film. The people who try to contain the affected people (officer looking people) sort of added to the suspense of if all the events are actually happening. All the actions inflicted by the crew are so abrupt and violent and in plain sight they almost make you think they are hallucinations. I guess that is the point of a movie like this. I also really like the ending where they roll the credits as the friend is having a melt down on the floor. They did a good job with showing raw emotions in this movie...just not too much story! Some people like that and some people don't. I tend to like a bit more story. I don't watch a lot of Frech cinema, so this was a neat watch!

Shudder rating: 5 out of 5 stars

My rating: 3.7 out of 5 stars. Very well done cinematography but didn't care for the loose story.
