Eraserhead

Hmm...now this one is bizarre one. It's one of the movies like Mother! where they just kind of throw you into this weird world without any warning or explanation. Meet Henry. A young man who is afraid of having a child (deformed or not) and is literally spiraling for the entirety of this movie. I understand that Lynch was either a new father during this time or was expecting a first-born soon so his anxieties around parenthood are very prominent in this film. I want to talk about a few things in this review. One, is the baby really deformed or is the warped infant a projection of how Henry views this parasitic creature? I want to believe the latter because this thing is just too grotesque and also appears out of Henrys body...sooo yeah...not normal. Two, who is the lady with the "moon" face? Is she death? Her song implies that, but I also want to think she is an egg and was squashing all the other sperms (an even further representation of how Henry's sperm was the one to make it through). I want to think death because there is a scene where Henry embraces the girl as if he has given up on life. Can we talk about the neighbor? I do think that she is the representation of other women immediately finding Henry less attractive because he has a kid of his own and also sort of represents the women he will never get to be with if he stays in this committed relationship. I mean, doesn't stop the dude from banging her but in theory she could represent that. Ok now for the whole Eraserhead part. I'm going to be honest; I think Eraserhead is just sort of a goofy name for the character to go with the hair and all but there is obviously an underlying meaning of trying to erase something (*cough cough like being a damn father to your demented baby). I watched this movie the other night when I was just the right amount of gardened and I was pretty intrigued the entire time. Like it really is artsy and dark and just so weird you can't look away!

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

My rating: 4.0 out of 5 stars (I was barely smart enough to understand parts of the film lol after doing more research this movie is growing on me!)
