Event Horizon
There is no way I understood what was going on in this movie when I first watched it in the late 90s or early 2000s. I remember segments of this movie, but I was just a kid, so it was good to watch this movie as an adult (and on DVD lol). This movie is trippy on a few levels. The first is that the Event Horizon ship is actually "haunted" for a lack of a better word. The ship has a biblical angel looking gravity drive that created a black hole to travel long distances in space. The main story focuses on Miller, Weir and crew on the Louis and Clark that is on a mission to discover what happened on the Event Horizon. The whole reason that the ship disappeared is because it must have entered a dimension of "Hell" and when it reappeared it had residual spooky elements. The horrors of this movie revolve around the possession or manipulation of the crew members as they find/explore the Event Horizon. The ship uses the personal traumas of the crew members. For instance, Weir rips out his own eyes while in a trance remembering his late wife who had killed herself in the bathtub due to depression driven by Weir's absence. Another crew member fell to her death while walking towards a vision of her son. Now let's see how much I remember from the ending lol. I do remember that Weir completely turned into a hellish character and was even a vessel for someone who resembled Satan. The ship was eventually blown up as 2 crew members were able to escape. The movie left the viewers to believe that the Louis and Clark now had remnants of being spooky and could be introducing that dark force into Earth's proximity. I was thinking to myself, wow, this would be a great movie to have a sequel with the way they set up the ending. I just googled "Event Horizon 2" and there is a teaser for a 2025 sequel?? We only have like a month left in the year people. Let's go!
IMDb rating: 6.6 out of 10 stars
My rating: 6.5 out of 10 stars. Really cool elements and I love the analogy of this being like Alien meets Hellraiser. I did find the middle of the movie to be a tad bit slow but really loved the amount of effort that went into this 90s flick!
