Thanksgiving (2023)
This movie had some pretty cool slasher/gore moments, but I didn't love this movie! It has that wacky Eli Roth feel, but idk it felt too clean? Also, McDreamy is in here?? That was such a weird pick for a main antagonist to me. I do like the whole concept of Black Friday causing a violent scene and the cop wanting revenge since his "girlfriend" was murdered during the BF massacre. The attacks in this movie were the best part. Attacked by corn holders via earholes?? New wife of the storeowner getting cooked to death and served to people?? I could tell they had fun with the creativity. The masks were also pretty creepy for being so simple. I mean white men are scary just as they are so these masks were pretty effective. They really centered this film on the vengeance of corporate greed leading to violence. I guess this is more considered a time piece now because I don't think anyone really goes nuts over Black Friday now that Cyber Monday exists. Idk, maybe because I live in the city now, I don't see lines out the doors to any department stores. I feel like I remember seeing a decent amount of line forming when I lived in the Midwest. This movie really tried to show to brutal primal trend of trampling over everyone to get a good deal. People getting trampled, cut, partially scalped...etc. all for a freaking waffle iron? I wish the vengeance was more about the concept of that rather than McDreamy's gf carrying his baby and now he doesn't get to live that life. I wanted the villain to be fed up with the corporate greed and control over the mass crowds! I liked this film, but I definitely enjoyed Cabin Fever more than this one. I feel like this is a good Eli Roth film for those who like more modernized horror and not a lot of the bizarreness he puts into his movies. Not a bad film, but it felt a little too on the nose for me during some parts. But hey, we needed a horror Thanksgiving move so here it is!
IMDb rating: 6.3 out of 10 stars
My rating: 6.0 out of 10 stars. I don't dislike it, but I don't find myself thinking about this movie a lot.
