The Blair Witch Project (1999)

This movie is legit about 2 dudes going crazy in the woods and blaming the female for everything going wrong lolllll like I get that Heather was the driver of the Blair Witch Project, but she didn't freaking kick the map into the creek like someonnnne. This movie definitely paved the way for found footage horror, but it is a bit underwhelming to watch in 2025 compared to how it slapped in the 90s. Let's dive into the story a bit. We have Heather, Mike and Josh (and yes, those are their real names too) doing a little sleepover in the woods to make a documentary on the Blair Witch. The town in Maryland that they are in was originally called Blair and there is rumor that a witch resided here and periodically kills people to keep her legend going (do you what you gotta do, Queen!) She is also getting a bit of her revenge out by doing this as well. It's a two for one deal! Now, the majority of the movie is really just the three of these 20 something year olds getting lost in the woods while the Blair Witch gaslights and torments them. Shit really starts getting real when Josh is not found in the morning and Mike/Heather receive a cute little gift of Josh's shirt holding what looks to be a tongue, teeth and like a finger? It's safe to say that Mike and Heather become a lot more high alert after this moment in the film. Heather really carries the weight of the team and acts maternally towards the situation. In that sense I mean more saying sorry to Josh and Mike's family even though she didn't directly cause any harm and was not responsible for Josh disappearing. Idk I just feel like women are the first to step up to that role because we take accountability more readily. Throughout the film, we see more and more evidence of the Blair Witch being present with the weird rock formations as well as the stick figures in the trees...etc. This movie would have been a dud without the ending in my opinion. Just like in Paranormal Activity, there were a few points that were scary but nothing to really make you have to invest...until THE END. The last segment of the film is still left up to debate/interpretation. Mike and Heather come across an abandoned house in the woods, and they think they hear Josh so Mike runs to the basement to see if he can find him. When he gets to the basement he is immediately struck, and the camera goes down. Heather (who was still upstairs) runs down and sees Mike in an odd position just standing in the corner before she is also knocked down. Now who did it?? Was it the Blair Witch herself or was Josh possessed to do the killings for her?? I can see both sides, so I really don't which theory to believe.

Shudder rating: 4 out of 5 skulls (I swore this was at a 5-skull rating yesterday)
My rating: 4 out of 5 skulls (no more no less)
