Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge
Freddy just keeps coming back for more! Just when you were kind of confused if he was defeated or everything was just a dream in the first movie, you quickly find out that Freddy is alive and out for vengeance. The story focuses on Jessie who has moved into Nancy's old house. He starts having crazy dreams just like Nancy did and the house is pretty warm (mimicking a boiler room). Jessie becomes pretty zombie-like and aggravated as he loses more and more sleep to try to prevent Freddy from appearing in his dreams. As the film continues, we see that Freddy literally starts controlling Jessie and takes his form from time to time. The bond between Jessie and Freddy is kind of an interesting one. Jessie tries to fight off Freddy's force, but Freddy often overpowers him and is able to make Jessie do things (like kills his P.E. teacher...or slash up a bunch of kids at a BBQ). There were some parts that were either up for interpretation or were a little hard to follow. For instance, when we see Freddy as a tangible being in "reality" we think is this, Jessie? Is Freddy now strong enough to take form in the human realm? I want to say it's literally Freddy because the kids at the BBQ would have been like "Jessie, what are you doing??" But I also think was this whole thing a nightmare with real-life kill counts like in the first film and Jessie is just dreaming very vividly. The ending (like the first movie) alludes to a dream, but this could also be a dream after the real instances actually happened?? I want to believe Freddy has manifested himself in the real world, but there are just certain instances besides the ending that make me think otherwise. Like why would Lisa be hallucinating the ants on her wound? She's not affected by Freddy so I feel like she shouldn't experience these types of things like Jessie. I also think the dream theory plays into effect with his fricken pet birds combusting. Idk I think there could be arguments on both sides to this, but I think I am more team dream since there seems to be more evidence to support it. Remember real murders can happen via dream so a lot of the violence was real. It could also be a combo of both! Maybe some parts were real, and some were dream sequences. Hmm maybe that is the most reasonable conclusion.
IMDb rating: 5.5 out of 10 stars
My rating: 7 out of 10. There was a decent amount of creativity for its time, and I honestly just love how flamboyant Freddy is hahaha
