Donnie Darko

I really do not have a single excuse why I haven't seen this movie until now? It was one of those movies where I kept saying "I reallllllly need to sit down and watch that movie someday." Today was the day I guess! This movie had a lot more depth to it than I thought it would have! Ok, so I had to run to see what some of the different interpretations were of the film and they are interesting for sure. I had a mix of two interpretations. One being that Donnie is part of elaborate plan to save the primary existence since the tangent exist has sprouted to eventually collapse on itself. At least I think?? It explains why Donnie has these unique powers like being able to see people's next actions and the ending sort of verifies this as well when the girl (I am terrible with names!!) has no idea who Donnie is even though they were all over each other in the tangent universe! That was probably a humongous run on sentence. The therapist also reveals to Donnie that his medication is just placebos so is this the director telling us he isn't actually mentally ill?? He is just the receiver to save the primary existence and ultimately all of humanity?? The other interpretation that I think comes into play is that Donnie actually does suffer from a mental illness that medication cannot cure. The medication can help, but there will always be symptoms. I am holding on to this interpretation a bit because Donnie brings up his emotional issues quite a bit during the film and that alludes to a personality disorder. Many people with personality disorders take medicine to help with some of the symptoms, but they cannot cure the disorder. So, the third interpretation (which might as well be in the mix!) is that Donnie is a representation of Jesus and is chosen to save humanity. Idk, honestly...it is probably a little of all of these. The symbolism could easily be applied to all of these.

Shudder rating: 5 skulls

My rating: 4 skulls (I was originally going to give it a 3.8 or 3.9, but after analyzing the movie a bit more, I think it deserves a 4)
