Candyman (1992)

Between Chucky and the Candyman, the Chicagoland area is busyyyyy (I lived in the Chicagoland area for the first 18 years of my life and the only Chucky I saw was my dad dress up as him). How did I not know this was a Clive Barker character?? I would say because I'm a poser and dumb, but I am trying to be nicer to myself these days. Ok, love so many things about the story. First off, the racism that was adapted from what Barker saw in Brittan that was adapted to the racism prevalent in America. It really highlighted how crimes in the projects were often looked over/not investigated (which adds on to how the Candyman was able to preserve the fear everyone had for him). That and the fact that the housing in the projects was not very secure and there was an actual murderer out there coming out of bathroom mirrors (and other places too prob, but I feel like the bathroom mirrors were significant). I mean Candyman's origin story started with racism from day one even though he had more privilege than a lot of African Americans during his upbringing. He died at the hands of racism as well with the legendary story of his arm being sawed off and being covered in honey and dying via bee stings all because he was with a white woman. It's truly creepy that some people still think on that primordial level and stories like that actually exist. Makes the entire movie and story so much more chilling. I am def going to watch the Jordan Peele adaptation again very soon.

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 4 out of 5 stars

My rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (The racism element adding to the horror of the story really made this movie unique. I really liked the way they did this movie)
