Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre

I really liked the animated series they did on Netflix, but I like the experience of the manga more. BUT! It was super cool getting to see some of these stories and characters come to life. I think my favorite stories are the ice cream kids and the mom who keeps ripping her child's flesh away because she wants the youngest version...super weird. They also did a really good job at making Soichi annoying AF. I feel like I said this a couple of times in other reviews, but I really like how twisted Japanese horror gets. I feel like American horror, although still good, sort of abides to a structure of mainstream acceptance? I don't know if that makes sense, but rarely do I see an American horror dive deep into, not only the occult, but the weirdness of it all. I mean I guess this is also sort of an anthology of short stories where you don't have to explain the origin of the weirdness for a lot of the skits AND its animated so you can add a lot of unique weird stuff that way, but idk. Every time I watch a Japanese horror movie or show I always feel like American horror needs to step it up! Still love my American horror though...don't get it twisted.
