Heretic
Wowwww what a great movie in a time of debates. I say that because even right now I have a debate on in the background on TikTok because I enjoy the noise and the perspectives. It's something to tune in and out of, I guess. It's fascinating to hear how strongly one side feels over another side and that is exactly what this movie is about. Let's get started. The best thing about this movie is that it gave small legitimacies for both sides of many arguments as the film went on. I say this as someone who is not religious. The obsession of someone who needs to prove the lack of religion is in almost the same way a....heretic. I mean, especially the way he did it. Holding women captive just because you can in the name of control and manipulation is not the same. Or is itttttt? Yes, it is a very drastic analogy, but say he was someone dressed in a priest outfit and the women were in habits? There is a disconnect because of the literal cages the women were inhabiting, but if the tangle aspect was not a factor, it's a parallel for sure. Another thing I noticed in the movie is the infringement that occurred on each side. First, the Mormon church coming to the home to further recruit/take next steps in their religion thennnn Hugh Grant by literally holding them hostage. Both (obviously one much more extreme in that circumstance) were invasive of the other party's life. Then the wholeee element of him drugging victims (women in this case) and bringing them to a near death experience (I guess full death then coming back to life). Like was he actually convinced he was a profit recording this stuff or was he just further proving his point that there is nothing after death?? I'm leaning towards something to prove, but at that point, might as well make a whole religion out of it lol.
