The VVitch
Alright, I saw an article on Bloody Disgusting saying that the two Vs in the title were from an old witch pamphlet, but is indeed pronounced "witch", Now that that's out of the way, what a cool little film. I think the film can be taken very literally about witchcraft (which I think the film is intended for) but I couldn't help but see some analogies for breaking away from family or religion in general to have your ultimate power in life (whether that be witchcraft or metaphorical as living as the true you). There is A LOT of symbolism in the movie. Lots of themes as well. One reoccurring theme is the "women are to blame" theme. Ultimately the dad in the situation has a lot of blame to be put on him, but it easily goes to the daughter. This is ultimately a reference to Eve "dooming" all of mankind and cursing all of womanhood. Even the mother was quick to blame the daughter and shunned her. Women were so quick to turn on each other in that time. Another theme that came up quite a bit was temptation. Black Philip was the culprit for everything weird happening around the family's farm (I mean he is lucifer). Between the goat and the nearby witches, the little boy was tempted by his lustful ways and daughter was tempted in the end to sign her soul away. In a way the father gave into the temptation of upholding his pride above his family as well. I think this movie did a great job as an A24 take on Puritan culture and witchcraft while still giving it that typical A24 unsettling feel. The ending also shows in a way how turning to some sort of faith is a solution for some people rather than having a faith that doesn't seem to provide. I mean at least the girl get butter and pretty dresses if she lives that coven lifeeeee. They are just a group of girlies overall...who might take unbaptized babies.
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars. Idk why I'm surprised?
My rating: 3.8 out of 5 stars. I appreciate the movie for sure, but not my favorite A24
