Black Christmas (1974)

My 100th post! I am actually pretty impressed that I watched/re-watched 100 horror movies and wrote a review on them! Next year I strive to do the same. How fitting that this is a Christmas horror movie, and I happen to be posting this just a couple days after the holidays. Now, I've been sort of a grinch during the holidays like I am every year, but I will have to say that I've watched some good movies this week. This is a rewatch for me, but I picked up on more stuff watching it the second time around. I also watched this on a Joe Bob Briggs Last Drive In special and learned a lot about the movie/director. What I didn't know is the beef Bob Clark and John Carpenter. I can totally see the similarities in the Halloween movies and this one and can see where some inspiration was drawn. I mean the movie was loosely based on the same urban legend(s) of the man in the house and the actual true crime case of the babysitter who had been murdered. I also had no idea this was a Canadian film, and I guess they tried really hard to market it to the American industry. I thought this movie did a good job having rememberable characters and for being a horror movie, this film had so many funny parts that actually delivered. I feel like some horror movies try to throw in some horror to lighten the mood or at least give it a mood cleanser but can't deliver it. This film delivered humor in a very organic sense by playing into the character's personality (I'm thinking mainly of the drunk sorority mom who was hiding bottles all over the house lolllll). Another thing I really liked about this film is that the killer remained anonymous. I think this irked some people, but I loved that the killer remained in the house and was still a mystery. I haven't seen the remake of this movie so maybe they allude to the killer's identity a bit more, but I really like they kept him such a mystery. What I wanted a bit more of though was more of the killer's back story...but that would also mean we would need more info about the killer to know who he is. This movie is basically a Guess Who game of who is terrorizing these poor kids/townsfolk.

Shudder rating: 5 out of 5 skulls (hmm I'm actually surprised it got all skulls)

My rating: 4 out of 5 skulls. It was good but it is not one of my favorite movies (those are reserved for 5 skull ratings)
