Audition

Surprisingly, I almost did not watch this movie. I started it and it was so slowwww, ugh but that comes to be expected with a lot of horror movies. This one certainly lived up to the slow-burn cliche. Oh boy, was I glad I watched though. In fact, I watched it the other night and then put it on in the background the next day at work (perks about working from home). I watched it mostly to rewatch the ending since it was messed up and confusing in some parts. There was a lot of speculation about whether the events were real because it flashed back to a moment where Asami and the widowed guy (I forgot his name...) are in bed together after a scene of the guy getting brutally wired and eye acupunctured to death! I mean I assume he dies after those traumatic events, but it doesn't make it clear at the end. I feel like the flashback to the scene where he is with Asami in bed is sort of like his brain recalling memories in his final moments. The story is definitely chilling and is very true about a lot of kids who grow up in abusive situations and don't get the help they need as adults. Their perception of love is very warped (and I'm speaking for myself as well). The fact that Asami eventually crossed the line over to evident insanity was based on the guy having love for his own son is actually really sad. I feel like love is constant trial for those who have had love taken away from them at such a young age where love is supposed to be abundant. Not only that, but she also still lived with the step-father!...and the creepy bag that I assume she had her ex-boyfriend in? Man, that was super creepy when that thing would just jolt around randomly. Asami has such a complex backstory I feel like they should make a prequel to this movie just called Asami. Everyone loves creepy Asian girls!-coming from a creepy Asian girl. Other highlights about the movie: I really liked the relationship between the father and son (I mean...Asami sure didn't lol). I felt like the two had a natural play off each other acting wise. A lot of people think this movie is an analogy of the dangers of getting into relationships too quickly. Yes, there is a point to be made about this, but I'm not sure that is the main premise. I'm more inclined to believe the real horror of this film is unresolved childhood trauma.

Shudder rating: 4 out of 5 skulls

My rating: 4 out of 5 skulls (I agree!)
