Carnival of Souls

This really is a beautifully done film (despite parts being slow as hell, but what do you expect with an old black and white horror film?? Why am I yelling at myself??) I really like Mary's character. She's so detached (it's giving girl boss?) She's just like yeah...I am a church organist, but like do I really vibe with church? Nah. I also have no idea why I am typing like this hahaha. So, I've heard two different takes on the film. Number one: Mary is in purgatory and the non-ghoul carnival people are bringing her to the light while the ghoul carnival people are trying to drag her down. I can see this logic by how persuasive both parties are. I mean you've got the persistent creep on the "light" side (could be interpreted as wanting her to be on his side) and then you have the carnival and ghoul who are trying to entice her all the time as well. Like these ghouls are trying to make her join their little ghoul party in Hell. The people who are on the "Heaven" side (I guess) are all sort of traditional and tied to religion (except the creepy neighbor, but he's just there for persistence lol). It also explains why she is terrified of being alone (aka not wanting to be with the carnival ghouls). The other popular interpretation is that this is just a woman's experience of getting constantly harassed and dictated. It's like she crashes out by the constant pressures of it. I mean I can sort of see this one, but the whole car incident makes it seem like it's something a bit more paranormal. I'm trying to understand what the car crash would represent in this interpretation, and I can maybe see it as an ego death? Oh! Some also see this film as Mary's last woosh of memories or life flashing before your eyes moment as she is drowning to death. Like she made this entire story up in her head as she was fighting for her life because the brain is insane. It really could be any of these! These are all interesting takes.
