Possession

Omfg the poor kid! I can't believe I've never actually seen this film before now. Like I've seen scenes from the movies (mostly memes of Anna going crazy in the subway), but not the entire movie. I'm so glad I did though because I love this movie. I mean I love how weird it intentionally is. Ok, here is my dissection of the movie. So obviously Mark and Anna are not having a good time and Heinrick is just in the mix because Anna needed companionship while Mark was away. There is obvious projection in the movie from the Director's own life events such as his divorce. That really showed in how he shaped Anna's character. He made her so aloof and almost alien-like (which sort of explains the alien that Anna is into). He also implies that Anna is not even looking for a human to have as a companion. It's like he is viewing her most desired person to be a synthetically grown thing of her own manifestation. She builds this "creature" from various men, and it sort of shows that the director is viewing her dream person and as collaborative effort of qualities from different men. Then the fact that both Mark and Anna went for (or helped create?) people that looked very similar to each other showed that we always look for people in our past in people in our future. I feel like that is usually true since there is a level of comfort in finding qualities we are familiar with. Now as I was saying about this poor kid. This kid is so obviously completely neglected for the entirety of the film. Like he was just left alone in the house for the longest time which is a better circumstance that being with his volatile parents BUT STILL. Also did he freaking drown himself at the end?? So much happened in the end. I love the poetic double death of Mark and Anna though. The way she arched her back and shot the both of them through her own spine was so artistic and symbolic. Which is this whole film I guess...man there is no film quite like this one. I feel like I could write an essay on this film to really get down into some of the symbolism in this film, but I've got more films to watch and more reviews to write!

Shudder rating: 4 out of 5 skulls (again, shocked that this didn't get the full 5 skulls!)

My rating: 5 out of 5 skulls. Loved it.
