Death of a Unicorn

Finally...a movie that makes unicorns terrifying! Man, so many things going on in this movie. This whole movie is also sort of an ecological metaphor about not taking sacred things in nature for human profit. Kind of like our national parks. I'm going to be honest; I think the lore part of the movie could have been a bit more evident or had more explanation. I like that it was still incorporated into the movie though. This movie was suuuuper campy (I actually wish it was a little less campy and had more of the typical A24 creep factor). They did a good job with making the unicorns ultra-violent, vengeful creatures. Ngl, most equestrians look like they would kill for revenge. There is something about them that seems so off-putting. Maybe it's also because my ex looks like one (a horse). It was kind of cool that they chose the creature in this creature feature to be something that is known for its beauty and mysterious aura. Then to top it off, they have magic, rejuvenating powers (the whole point of why these gross humans want to harvest the baby unicorn). It's true in the animal kingdom that a lot of parents will go berserk for their offspring (which makes sense to pass on genetics). I think this film really played off of that. A24 probably had a really good time with this theme and doing the CGI to make these creatures as disturbing as possible. The ending is sort of a cliff-hanger though. It's like...did Ridley and Elliot go to jail or did the unicorns kill them? They also did a lot of odes to Alien (even Ridley and Ripley). I mean look at the poster on this post!

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 3 out of 5 stars

My rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars (It was good but a bit toooo campy)
