Goodnight Mommy (American Version)
I have to rate the American version of films first because I tend to be harsher. I generally find American adaptations sort of cringy; however, this one wasn't so bad. There were a lot of good elements in this movie that I enjoyed. The first being that you don't realize you are living in Elias's delulu world until the end. I feel like they did a good job at not making that obvious until the very end. Lots of movies sort of give those elements (the ones that are supposed to alter your perception of the entire film) away too early in the movie where this one did a good job at making the brother quite real for almost the whole duration of the movie. It isn't until the very last scene where we see "mommy" get killed and Elias summoning her back to life through his imagination. If anything, this movie shows what our brains are capable of when we are in need of coping. Little kids are especially prone to living in a tangible make-believe world (I mean at least I think) since they can more easily permeate that membrane (yes, I am a bio major lol). Another haunting aspect of this movie is that because you aren't made aware of Elias's mental state until the very end, the viewers are left to wonder if the mother way actually concealing herself or was Elias so delulu he couldn't recognize his mommy! Like trauma is so real...it can really mess up your perception of everything. I truly feel bad for this kid. It appeared that both of his parents were also trying to cope with the loss of their other son while "trying"? (trying as much as they could?) to be there for the other son. That's such a rough predicament. It reminds me of the whole Hereditary fiasco. Trauma on top of trauma on top of trauma, on top of no one addressing the trauma. This movie really highlighted that. Lastly, I liked some of the special effects and creature feature mini scenes they did with the mommy (lolllll I keep saying that). Again, I feel like it showed the immersive imagination of Elias's mind.
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 2 out of 5 stars (ok, that's a little rough but I was sort of expecting that)
My rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars (the story is great, but the American adaptation is just not as good! I'll review the other one later)
