The Rule of Jenny Pen

Interesting movie...I don't think it would have done nearly as well without John Lithgow. Ugh I wanted more from this movie though! Not that the characters weren't played out very well or that Lithgow wasn't unhinged. I just wanted moreeee unhinged and honestly more explanation on wtf is happening. They make references that Lithgow's character had worked at the nursing home during his younger years so maybe that's why he is terrorizing everyone? Almost like he has a personal grudge with the place and has enough influence to not really get into trouble. That or he legit scares everyone at the facility and they don't want to deal with him. Either way! This guy loves taking his little dolly and terrorizing people (probably my retirement plan as well). What I like about this movie is the uniqueness of the plot and characters. There are a couple horror movies I can think of that highlight geriatric horror but do not get a phycological as this movie. Those movies focus more on the (sounds terrible) the grotesqueness of their elderly anatomy? These sort of movies all sort of highlight the mental instability of old age as well. I really wanted to know more about the doll's history! All I really got from the doll is that it was sort of like a vessel for Lithgow's character to torment everyone. Jenny Pen is like a representation of elderly abuse. Creepy element for sure, just wanted more backstory. There is also the whole gaslighting element of already senile people that makes the movie interesting. All in all, lots of good elements, but not as cohesive as I would have liked it to be. This movie got a lot of hype and Lithgow is so good at being unhinged (thinking Dexter). I wanted him to be MAX unhinged. Oh well...still did a pretty good job.

Shudder rating: 4 out of 5 skulls

My rating: 3.9 out of 5 skulls...I said what I said.
