When Evil Lurks
About time I got around to this movie! It's won so many awards and is always featured on Shudder. This movie did not disappoint and will be one of the most memorable horror films I've seen. First, it was unique how the possession manifested itself as a tangible disease. Uriel is called a "Rotten" because dude is literally rotting due to the possession. You can see how bloated he is, and he is covered in all sorts of gooey sores. The possession rate in the movie is rapid. Sometimes the demon movies through hosts immediately (thinking of when the step-dad rams the wife and kits into the wall with a truck then the little girl is seen dancing in the next scene). The possession seems to spread wherever the brothers travel or come into contact with. For instance, Pedro's ex-wife's family is totally fine until he busts through the door (awkwardly shedding all of his clothes) and screams at them about the demon. It's like the most knowledge about the demon there is or the more energy that is manifested into the fear of it, the faster the possession happens. Now, Pedro and Jaime's mother did tell them of the rules to NOT be possessed, but they don't go along with them. I mean, none of the town really does. They are kind of bizarre rules though...like don't use electricity? Don't use guns? Step-dad killed freaking Cujo with a gun and angry land-owner shot freaking Phillip from The VVitch and look what happened. Also, Pedro you really should have listened to your friend at the end. SHE SAID NOT TO GO AND GRAB THE AXE BECAUSE IT DOESN'T EXIST. Now look...your friend has been hammered to death by demon children, Uriel has given birth to Satan's spawn, and your mother was eaten by your own child!!! The demon children were a little confusing, but kind of cool. This movie did make a good point "Evil loves children and children love evil". They always seem to be susceptible hosts *cough cough Sinister **cough cough Insidious **cough cough cough Late Night with the Devil ***cough cough The Exorcist. The coughing list can go on...loved this movie though.
Shudder rating: 5 out of 5 skulls
My rating: Dare I say...5 out of 5 skulls? Like this movie is so good and so cohesive. I really need to get into more Spanish horror!
