City of the Dead
Unless Shudder TV set it up this way, idk how I got so lucky to walk in at the exact moment Last Drive In Live was hosting this movie! Like it literally started as soon as I sat down with my chicken teriyaki. I think this movie actually kind of spooky for its time! I love the cult element to it. There's a lot of elements that I like about this movie. I really like that the whole freaking town got what it deserved for burning (attempting) to burn a human being alive. She straight up asked Satan if he could make this town forever eternal and have to sacrifice 2 virgins on 2 particular days. It took me a little bit to figure out of the town is the original town when the scheduled witch burning was supposed to occur or if it was new cult following inhabiting the town for Satannnn worshipppp (in a spooky voice). I'm almost 100% sure that the town is the original town based on the name of the movie. I also really liked the twist of the professor being a witch too (or at least part of that town? I remember he was saying he was born there and I'm trying to remember if his tomb said something about him being a witch too). The way that the whole town stares at newcomers though kind of took me out. Like it was so intense hahaha literally looking for fresh meat to sacrifice. It's kind of giving the same vibe of the guy from Midsommar leading the group to a festival knowing they are going to be the victims of it. The teacher knew what he was doing by sending his student to that place. The brother was like "uhhh, there is no Raven's Inn...". Ok, the ending was a little hokey with the whole shadow of the cross is what's going to kill the undead in this town. There was so much time where the sacrifice could have just been done (even after waiting for the 13th hour!) and it was ohhh noooo this man who has been injured is hobbling towards us and there is nothing we can dooooo plus it's nighttime and how is there enough shadow to really do anythingggg. Also, the main witch (I forgot her name) was found back at her seat at the hotel all charred up? Like did she hobble over there after getting burned by the cross's shadow? That was a little confusing how we ended up there with her but maybe I missed something! Main take away is that she no longer had eternal life and the undead (at least a good number of them) also suffered the same fate!
