The Substance

I cannot believe how long it took me to watch this movie...it was not intentional! I'm just cheap and didn't want to pay to rent it off Amazon and I just never saw it in theaters! The other day I went to a friend's house, and he hadn't seen it before either. I...love...this movie. This movie is seriously so good and when I eventually make my little pyramid of favorite horror movies, this one is definitely going to make it. This movie brought so many things to light. The biggest one being how some people can only see the flaws in themselves. We are all guilty of that to some degree, but this movie really shows a whole new level. Demi Moore is freaking 60 in this movie and looks fantastic, yet she cannot face herself because she sees herself aging (naturally and beautifully, but she ultimately doesn't see her "flawless" younger self). I get it! I look in the mirror and I'm like why are my cheeks wider? Why are there now little dents under my eyes? Does my face look rounder? I'm only 34 and understand wanting to look like you did when you are in your 20s. I work out regularly too! It's very symbolic how Elizebeth eventually kills herself trying to stay in her youthful form. I mean...the instructions were minimal, but VERY clear. She broke the rules a couple times and was surprised she turned out to be gremlin in the end? The end made me lolllll she literally just stuck on a huge pic of her face on top her monster body (and not even the right version of herself hahaha). Then she had a sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy moment at the end where was called a monster by crowds of people (her ultimate fear and how she views herself). All of that just to become a mushy head cephalopod mass crawling towards your own star on Hollywood Blvd. The disintegration of what was left of her only to be cleaned up by a street sweeper the next morning was kind of poetic as well. The cinematography of this movie was sooooo gooood. They made everything eerie, sterile, and had camera angles that kind of made you question if you were in reality or observing a memory from afar. The whole premise of respecting the balance and there is only one was reoccurring in the movie. That could be applied to how we view ourselves in real life as we are always becoming an older version of ourselves. Nothing will be the way it used to be (they also could not undo any of the changes once the Substance was activated). Ok, I need to stop writing before this thing gets humongous...just such a well-done movie with just the right amount of body horror! Bangin' soundtrack too!

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (I'm actually shocked it didn't get the full 5 stars)

My rating: 4.9 out of 5 stars (idk why I'm so hesitant to give 5 stars! This movie really left an impression on me)
