Tomie
Did I hear that there's like 9 frickin' movies to the Tomie film series?? Looks like I will have a lot more to watch. Some say this is the best one! Don't we all say that about the original anything though? I have also read the entire Tomie manga collection by Junji Ito so I was looking forward to this film. What is so interesting about Tomie is that we are not entirely sure what she is except that she doesn't directly kill, and she can respawn. She drives men in particular to insanity to the point where they either kill her (and she can respawn) or they kill themselves. In this film, we start off with a police investigation looking into the suspicious Tomie murders. Multiple girls named Tomie were found murdered in a vicinity in Japan. One girl that was one of the Tomie's friends has no memory of what happened to her, so we are sort of guessing as the audience as well. The movie bounces around from the psych, detective and Tomie's friend. Tomie eventually tries to seduce the friend's (cheating) boyfriend to get a reaction out of him and tries to torment the friend as well. Even when she is killed and beheaded, she comes back to life! Now, I wish that the ending had a bit more dialogue for my dumbass to understand. I get it now, but I was a little lost as to what was happening at the time. The friend pretty much blows up Tomie and we think she is gone, and the friend is living her best life. However, when the friend looks in the mirror, we can see the small mole under her eye (the same position where Tomie had hers insinuating that she was becoming Tomie). I guess that little kiss Tomie gave the friend did something to transfer herself to her friend?? Either way Tomie's life cycle continued on course...
Shudder rating: 4 out of 5 skulls
My rating: 3.8 out of 5 skulls (only because my expectations were extremely high after reading the manga)
