Choose or Die
I don't know how to feel about this movie! I love the whole 80s retro feel and the old school gaming aspect of it all, but some parts didn't really land for me. I think I just have to take out trying to make sense of the curse altering reality and just accept how the curse works. I'll kind of skip around the film so I can explain the origin of the game called Curs>r. The game is first seen in this dude's 80s nostalgia room where he is given a prompt to choose between his son's tongue or wife's ear. After choosing this son's ear and seeing the game is actually making these choices come to fruition, he is asked another question: die or make copies of the game and distribute them. Soooo he chooses the latter, and the game finds its way to a nerdy kid who finds it at some estate sale or something. He and his little girl crush (totally forgot her name) start exploring this game together and are finding that the game makes the players choose real life scenarios where the consequences are very real. They play the game for a few levels and not only become victims themselves of the brutal psychological torture, but family members and innocent people also get involved. They try to find the source of this curse so they can get to the bottom of everything. They dial the number that was advertised for the game and trace it back to this place where we watch the developer explain the curse embedded in the game. The symbols are able to grant the "Cursor" the ability to gain benefits from the one who is being cursed. For example, if the cursor was bleeding and the cursed was also wounded, the cursor would start to heal. This is important because the main girl eventually visits the guy who originally made copies of the game (who is considered a cursor at this point). It is a little confusing at the end and I think I missed something because when the girl got shot the guy felt the pain and I feel like he should have healed or something? Maybe there was no wound to heal or there was a different dynamic between them because was more of an intermediate cursor? I did a small bit of research, and it seems like this was a rule added at the end and wasn't really mentioned? Either way lol they are able to inflict pain on one another through each other's bodies. The girl eventually drowns herself to kill the dude ultimately setting the family free from his grasp. The ending was pretty poetic with the girl having the power (and the code) to be the cursor and she chooses the sleezebag drug dealer to be the first victim. He is subjected to the cursed code and he plunges his face in a sink full of needs and allows the girl to physically (and prob mentally) heal.
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 1.5 out of 5 stars (OUCH! that was a bit harsh)
My rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars (the premise was interesting and I'm a sucker for anything video game related. I liked the retro feel but some parts were confusing. I wish they went into the curse a bit more).
