Impetigore

Woah, this is such an intricate story and so unique! I freaking loved this movie. The story is awesome, and I love the main actress. Another Joko Anwar masterpiece and another great Indonesian horror flick. I guess I can start from the beginning. First off, I like the dynamic between Maya and Dini. They go back to Maya's place of birth to claim a house that she apparently inherited. This is after a psycho dude tries to kill Maya at her job as a toll booth attendant. Fast forward to them being in the village and Dini pretending she is Maya so she can get the papers to the house and leave. Little did she know that the plan was skin Maya and use it for puppetry...you have to think of these things! Well, she was killed, and they didn't realize they got the wrong girl until after the puppet show. Womp womp. We then find out the juicy details of Maya's "dad" performing black magic and kidnapping/killing/flaying three little girls. Maya was born without skin, so the "dad" wanted to just restore her back to normal. It worked! However, the town was cursed, and no babies were born with skin (and were drowned pretty much right away). To break the curse, Maya's skin needed to be cut and made into puppets (or so the town thinks). The spirits of the three ghost girls actually say the way to break the curse is to bury their bones with their skin (the puppets). We alsoooo find out that the Saptadi is actually Maya's dad and his mom put a curse on him for the baby to be messed up and him to lose memory of Maya's mom. Maya's mom was with her dad because he was rich but couldn't give her a child. The ending was wildddddd. Maya tells Saptadi that the curse is lifted (and it is because a healthy baby was finally born) and the mom still tries to kill Maya! Saptadi had enough though and forced the knife in his mom's hand to cut his own throat. Then the mom slit her own throat. The last scene is the mom haunting the village by consuming newborns. What a twisted story! A lot to wrap my head around!

Shudder rating: 4 out of 5 skulls (I'm shocked this didn't get 5 skulls)

My rating: 4.8 out of 5 skulls (the only reason it didn't get the full 5 is because I wish some of the scenes were a bit scarier, so many creepy scenes though and, again, incredible story).
