Daddy's Head
Wtf this movie was so weird, but I really liked it! There were so many layers to this movie. Like was that creature real or Isaac just trying to cope with his dad being killed in a car accident? I tend to take horror movies very literally, so I want to believe that this was a shape-shifting creature that resided in the forest. Then I think to myself, well why is this creature obsessed with Isaac? So that makes me shift to the side of this all being in his...but Laura and Paul's friend were both affected by the creature. Again, that could all still be in his head?? The creature was so freaking scary. Like that one scene where his full-on face is just on this creature is so freaky!! So uniquely scary too. I haven't really seen something that freaky in a movie in a while. This movie has a huge emphasis on the bond between Isaac and Laura after Paul passes away. It's really heavy to watch. This kid just needs a hug and attention, and Laura can't escape her own demons to help him. You see the ebbs and flow of their relationship as they both want comfort, but they are like strangers to each other with the dad being the gap for them. I can totally relate to that. My stepmom and I never got along in general, but it was so awkward when it was just the two of us. It was like I could feel her hate towards me. It's truly heartbreaking to watch them be so distant when they almost need each other in that moment of grief. The ending was interesting and sort of sweet. Isaac is seen reentering that weird hut in the forest where the creature must have run off to when Laura had stabbed him in the house. There are skeletal remains of a creature without a face and a picture of Isaac and his dad. When Isaac returns, he calls Laura "mom" making us feel like they bonded ever since that night. I was pleasantly surprised by this movie! I would recommend to someone who was looking for a weird film to watch.
Shudder rating: 4 out of 5 skulls
