Bring Her Back

Ok, damn, this has to be one of the saddest horror movies I've ever seen. This whole movie is based on the trauma of grief and how it consumes the mind, body, and yes, soul. For as sad as this movie was, I freaking loveddddd it. I love a movie that is just so uncomfortable, and it makes you feel like you can't breathe at certain points. I will say that like a lot of A24 movies, this movie doesn't do too much explaining. It just is. You just kind of have to accept that yeah, of course you summon the soul of a person by making a person mimic their death and then making a demon consume the old body so the soul can enter a new body as its host. The demon part made the plot a little confusing...like why does a demon have to eat the old body? Ah, but here I am again asking questions in an A24 movie. A24 would just say "cuz" or "duh, that's just how it's done." All the acting in this movie was phenomenal. I mean as much as I hate Laura, damn that lady did a good job being a gas-lighting, children fighting, crazy lady! The kids all did a great job too, holy crap. I did wish they went a little more into the dad's death or explained how the dad's death played a role in any of Cathy's summoning. Like I know Ollie ate the hair and Laura admits she killed the dad at the hospital when poor Andy was just trying to heal from a concussion?? Like lady, one thing at a time jeez! Oh man and so many brutal scenes in this movie, most notably, the knife in the mouth scene. That car crash in the driver was pretty wild too and then Andy's death in that puddle??? Ugh so many scenes where I was like omg I cannot even process or look away. I love movies like that! Ok, I could honestly write a few pages about this movie, but I like to keep these reviews relatively the same length, so I won't go into it much more. Awesome ending! I'm glad Piper got away and Olli was found. I was not expecting that actually with how dismal the movie was going. Damn, why they gotta do Andy like that whole movie though? Dude has had it so rough. The final scene where Laura is just in the pool with her partially eaten, half-defrosted dead daughter's corpse was actually really beautiful and so gut-wrenching.

7.2 out of 10 stars (what?? I expected a little higher even though this is pretty decent)

My rating: 9.5 out of 10 stars. One of the best horror movies I've seen this year. I'm so glad it was on HBO Max!
