Dark Match
I watched this movie a couple of times honestly because it is a pretty fun watch. Scary? No. Campy? Yes, without being cringe or laying on the jokes too thick. Action-packed? Yeah! It's a freaking horror wrestling movie. Original? I think so! I mean, I can't think of another horror wrestling movie, however, the idea of sacrificing people to summon a powerful demonic Overlord has been done too many times to count. The coolest part of this film is that there were some actual real-life wrestlers in the film! I think the cast did pretty well together. I wish Miss Behave showed a bit more vulnerability, but hey, she is a strong lady! Alright, the film focuses on independent wrestling, and this small group is invited to do a big tournament out in the middle of nowhere for a pretty handsome amount of money. They, of course, agree but as soon as they get to the place, they realize something is off. There is this dark aura, and they are literally getting drugged. The next day, the matches start and there are 4 matches that are all elementally themed (air, water, fire, and earth matches). We find out later that these matches were designed to gather human sacrifices for each of the elements and summon Satan (or least a Satanic monster). So yeah, people are dying in these matches. There is also the element of the events being recorded for snuff film profit which they indicate in some parts of the film, but I think the main driver behind having this tournament is the whole summoning the dark lord thing. Unfortunately, some of the crew dies, but Miss, Joe, and the owner are able to escape after killing The Profit and other in the other group. Little did they realize that one of the workers of the other group was still alive and was doing the ritual. The film ends on a cliff-hanger of this huge Satanic beast confronting their van while the crew gets ready to fight. I think this film had a few spots where it felt slightly empty, but as a whole this was a good watch and would recommend as a non-scary horror movie any day!
Shudder rating: 4 out of 5 skulls
My rating: 3.8 out of 5 skulls (as I said, pretty fun but didn't really impress me)
