Day of the Dead (1985)

Man, it's been a while since I've done a review! Now that I am back from Yosemite no more messin' around...it's spooky month and time to binge allllll the movies. I started watching Day of the Dead in California when I was sick but then passed out so I rewatched it when I got back home to Seattle. FYI this was such a fun watch as part of a Last Drive In special! This is Romero's last installment of the "Living Dead" trilogy and as someone who does not realllly like zombie flicks. This one was actually one of my favorites. There are a few reasons for this. The main reason is that the film really shed light on the ugliness of humanity. The zombies are supposed to be void of typical human characteristics but that means they are also not sexist, racist pieces of shit like some of the human crew. Bub the zombie gets pretty much all the zombie fame as he is the zombie locked in the lab for experimentation. I really love this character because he is like a reflection of the kindness and compassion humanity still has (even in the smallest amounts). His demeanor completely changes when he is around Dr. Logan and when he is around Captain Rhodes. He senses the compassion in Logan and the hostility of Rhodes and actually ends up killing Rhodes as a result of his lack of compassion. This movie is also very eerie to watch today with everything going on in America. With our president claiming that the enemy is within and causing an even greater divide in our country, it really does feel like the scientists vs. the military. The military does not want to give up power and escalates further into authoritarianism to try and keep that power, when peace and prosperity can be aided with scientific research. Dr. Sarah is such a badass in this movie and one of the coolest female protagonists. She puts up with so much from these dudes...I don't know if would make it if I was the only female left on Earth. That last scene in the movie where it's just the two dudes and her on an island is heartwarming, but I think we allllll are thinking the same thing. Is she gonna be Eve and start human civilization over again?? This movie is definitely an inspiration for many of the zombie movies/tv shows we see today (most notably The Walking Dead). Great job Romero for actually making me enjoy a zombie flick!!

Shudder rating: 5 out of 5 skulls (actually deserved)

My rating: 4.2 out of 5 skulls (listennnnnnn that is very high for a zombie flick)
