The Power

Woah, this was a POWERful movie, haha see, I referenced the movie title...but for real this was a really freaking powerful movie. The title is kind of a play on the time where the UK literally had to shut power off to parts of their cities after certain hours to conserve energy and money. Thennnn there is the whole power dynamic happing during the 70s where women were very much still not dominant figures in like 99% careers. Not only did men dominate, but women were often forced to exchange sexual favors to move up or even keep their jobs. I mean, yes, that still happens now, but there wasn't even HR back in the day. The story of the film focuses on a nurse named Val who has to work night shifts at hospital as a new hire. She freaking hates it of course because it is scary as hell. She starts becoming possessed by some spirit at the hospital and we later find out that the spirit belongs to a girl who had been assaulted and then murdered at the hospital. The spirit is trying to tell Val and one of the girls at the hospital about her story and the truth about her death. It is really messed up because in the end we see that the head dude at the hospital straight up said that little girl never existed when he was the one who had assaulted her (I'm pretty sure). It just showed how disposable women were especially during that area (which wasn't that long ago). The ending was really good. Val escaped with one of the girls who was subject to having the same fate as the little girl who had possessed Val. I love that she was holding both her hand and the ghost's hand as they ran out of the facility. The film really did shed light on the horrors of sexual abuse in the workplace and just how filthy men with any sort of power are. I think some of the scenes could have been a bit scarier, but the story is amazing, and I really don't have too many other complaints about this one!

Shudder rating: 4 out of 5 skulls
My rating: 4.3 out of 5 skulls (this is one of those stories that will stick with me!)
