The Things (1982)
Ok, I just watched this movie yesterday and took some notes and I would like to say this really is one of the best sci-fi horror movies that was ever made. The special effects and story are absolutely amazing in this film. This movie really set the bar for this genre of horror film way back in the day. I'll do a quick breakdown of the movie in case you are reading this review (I know my blog is extremely popular) and either haven't seen it or haven't seen it in a while. We have 2 base camps in Antarctica. One is US and one is Norway. We think the Norwegians are assholes from the start since they are shooting at a dog from a helicopter. We see that this same dog is separated from the other dogs and has spent some time alone with one of the people from the US crew. The US crew decide to investigate the Norway camp since they haven't heard from them, and one person had started attacking their base. They find parts of a spacecraft (oh yeah, the beginning starts off with a spacecraft flying around the Earth). Ok, now let's get back to the suspicious doggie. Doggie actually turns out to be infected by this "Thing" parasite and its body start doing the most. Some of it is killed by the crew, but part of it escapes. The escaped bits slowly start affecting and mimicking different members of the crew making no one trust nobody in this stinking camp. We find out that the parasite infecting everyone reacts to fire and electricity and will react when ever in contact in either. This leads to one crew member getting attacked while using a defibrillator and MacReady applying heat to everyone's blood samples. More and more of the US crew go down while the last scenes of the movie focus on the parasite escaping in the snow. The last two people in the US crew don't want the Thing to bury in the snow to get defrosted later so they literally start blowing up all the buildings to exude as much warmth as possible. The ending isn't clear as to whether Childs and MacReady survive or if the Thing was defeated/unable to bury in the snow. Idk something is sort of off with MacReady and part of me thinks him wanting to wait it out in freezing whether might give away that he is, in fact, infected. But...who knows! I'm sure there is an expert on this film reading this and shaking their head hahahaha.
IMDb rating: 8.2 out of 10 stars
My rating: 8.3 out of 10 stars. I'm actually surprised this didn't get a higher rating! People freaking love this movie!
