The Village

I haven't seen this movie in probably 10+ years, so it was a fun one to rewatch. I'm not going to lie, I forgot so much of the plot and actually forgot the twist at the end, so it was really like I hadn't seen it lolll. I think this movie has a lot of good parts to it. The biggest one is the twist at the end. The whole time we are watching, we are led to believe that this is sort of an old puritan village then we see a car when we see Ivy scale the wall. I remember watching that scene and felt so confused. I was like did I miss something or how is there just a freaking car driving around. I also really liked that Ivy was unable to see color and was immune to seeing all the red berries around her in the woods. The main theme of this movie in my opinion is that you can do nothing to be safe from this world. The elders of this village all were trying to escape the evils of the world by creating their own little commune. However, that backfires when the true dangers came from someone of the own community. Granted, Noah had a lot of mental problems, but he was the creature that everyone was so worried about. He had these costumes and diabolic behaviors that made it appear like there was a whole group of monsters surrounding the village when really Noah was just terrorizing everyone. It just made me think like wow all that work to get away from everybody and your number one attacker lives in your very community. The end also emphasized that it was almost impossible to survive without being attached to some sort of modern society. The whole reason Ivy climbs the wall is to get medicine (something they either had none, very little, or not the right type of). To me it was like M. Night was trying to convey that the less you work together in the world, the more the isolation will harm you. There are lots of themes of isolation in this film and it seems like everyone is living a completely unique experience within this small commune of people. M. Night, of course, always does a great job with not only his twists, but symbolism. I think the movie could have done a bit more with the very end, but all in all, I think it was a pretty good length and kept me pretty in sync with the mood.

IMDb rating: 6.6 out of 10 stars (I felt like I just rated some movie that was also a 6.6/10 from IMDb...)

My rating: 7 out of 10 stars because the story is very unique. Not really scary at all, but def sort of creepy in some parts.
