Friday the 13th (1980)
Wow, it has been forever since I've watched this movie. I couldn't resist getting the box set that was on sale so now I have so many of these movies to watch! Ngl I haven't seen a lot of the sequels so I'm kind of excited. It's so funny because Jason really isn't even featured in the first installment of the franchise. He is definitely the motivator for his mommy going crazy but as for Jason actually being in the film, he really only has one scene and it's a hallucination. I sort of wish they kept Jason's mom in the series (well as more than just a voice) but I can see why they eliminated her character for Jason to start seeking revenge. Revenge on top of revenge! Jeez guys give it a break! Now, although I do like these movies more than the Halloween movies, they still are not on the top of my list. I'm not a huge fan of campy slashers like this and I think Sleepaway Camp is better, but I did appreciate this film more watching it again. What's not to like when you have a gaggle of teens/young adults getting a creepy cursed camp set up. Didn't the local townsman call the place like "Camp Blood" or something stupid like that lollll. I also really like that the main antagonist in the film is an older woman because who would have thought! It's really sad that the victims couldn't escape her because she really wasn't that fast and didn't seem that strong? I guess some people just freeze in moments of fight or flight. I mean she was beheaded at the very end, but damn, she killed a lot of people before that happened. The fact that Jason becomes famous after the first movie says something about the franchise though. It's popular enough that the main character wasn't even introduced in his full form until later on meaning that people were at least hooked enough to continue the story. I imagine watching this in 1980 and yeah, I think it would have scared me a little bit but not as much as Freddy would have scared me. Well, I have to make my way through the rest of that DVD box set! More F13th reviews to come!
IMDb rating: 6.4 out of 10 stars (I'm surprised it didn't get higher!)
My rating: 6.0 out of 10 stars (and it is really because the ending is pretty good)
