Gremlins
Wow, I have not seen this movie in probably over a decade. Gizmo is so cuteeeeee lol but so is Stripe! This is such an interesting horror movie because it feels so fantastical (the Spielberg effect) and then some gruesome events take turn. When I listened to a podcast about this film, I was glad they pointed out the racism that was just accepted in older films. Like nothing was crazzzzzy racist, but this movie is pretty much about magic Asian people keeping things away from white people because they can't take care of things properly. Maybe that wasn't the full message, but I think that was an underlying theme. I love how the old Asian dude just shows up at the end of the movie scaring the beegeebees out of everybody when he takes Gizmo back. Now, let's go over the only three rules that one must follow to possess a mogwai. 1. No bright light. 2. Do not expose them to water. 3. Do not feed them after midnight!!!! No wonder these things have be kept under lock and key. Billy literally only had him for a short amount of time and the whole town was in danger after Stripe and his gang took over. Can we also talk about the "pupas" (eggs??) looking like they came straight out of Alien?? That was so funnnny and you knew something was amiss when those eggs started showing up. I mean, at least these things are really easy to defeat. Stripe was literally killed by just being in direct light. I heard they had this rule in the movie so that most of the scenes would remain dark to hide the wirings or whatever else they use for the Gremlin props. The best part about this movie is def how morbid Billy's love interest is. The fact that her dad slipped and broke his neck while trying to go down the chimney and freakin died there?? No one she doesn't like Christmas! I don't blame her! I'm going to be honest, I haven't really seen any of the sequels, so I have a lot to look forward to! My heart definitely melted when little Gizmo said "Bye....Billy...." at the very end. Awwwwwwwww.
IMBd rating: 7.3 out of 10 stars
My rating: 8.1 out of 10 stars. Not scary at all obviously but I love the creativity and all the mischief the mogwai get into! Is this considered a creature feature but in an adorable way?
