The Lighthouse
Damn, I don't know what took me so long to see this movie! I guess the whole lighthouse thing didn't appeal to me, but I knew the acting was going to be good when I saw that these two were in the movie. I think that both of them are so different and talented that they really represented different realms. There are a lot of people who are behind the theory that these two lighthouse keepers are Prometheus and Proteus. I can see that in a very literal sense, and I agree that the movie made a lot of references in that direction, however, I also like the theory that this is just innovation vs. tradition. Let me get into the film a little before talking about this theory. We have these two lighthouse keepers that are pretty much isolated from the world. We find out that the two men are actually both named Thomas and Pattinson's character killed his old boss and took his identity (I think that is what happened at least...I'm writing this review a bit after watching). Dafoe's character really tries to undermine Pattinson and pretty much makes sure that he does not have knowledge (the lighthouse light) and stays doing small jobs. Pattinson rightly becomes outraged over time and eventually buries Dafoe while he is still alive as he cannot stand the constant oppression and wants to experience the knowledge of the lighthouse himself. When he does the lighthouse straight up disappears and leaves Pattinson to be fed to the seagulls. Obviously, a whole bunch of stuff happens in the middle of the film like Pattinson wanting to bang a mermaid, taking his anger out on seagulls after Dafoe said he not do so, lots of drunken nights that are slightly sexual...etc. The best thing about this movie is the cinematography and the two different acting methods these two exhibit. This movie was really captivating in its visuals in pure acting styles. This is one of those movies I could probably write an entire essay about, but I am going to keep it short on my little old blog!
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (about 300 reviews and a pretty high rating!)
My rating: 4.2 out of 5 stars (I love the descent into madness and just some of the chilling gruesome scenes).
