Other (2025)

Another review where I watched the movie a few weeks ago and life got busy, so I haven't reviewed it yet. This movie had some promise to it, but I have to admit I felt it was a bit rushed of a movie. I wish they went into more detail about the main lady's childhood abuse and her relationship with her mother. Sure, they alluded a lot and there were some scenes, but I wanted to know more since that was a huge part of the story's backbone. I get the story about how this girl was basically raised to be pretty and win pageants, so the mom had to "get rid" of her baby, but I felt like they skimmed over it and were like okkkk next scene. Another weird thing about the movie was how it started. I really thought this movie was going to more found footagey, but it really wasn't. The best part about the movie was that I really wasn't expecting the kid to still be alive. Now, why was the kid going after faces? I mean, my theory is that he was jealous of those who got to be seen in society as he was locked up by his maternal grandmother. It could have something to do with just destroying beauty in general since the goal of beauty is what took his mother away to begin with. Idk I go with the first theory more because I think an animal's face was also mauled. The kid was also ashamed of his own face as he was kept from the outside world for so long. Throughout the whole movie, faces are very ambiguous or not shown at all. That had to have been on purpose to relay the distortion of public appearance and identity. Idk, overall, there were some good concepts and good moments in the film, but I can't myself going around and recommending this one unless I knew someone that grew up in the pageant scene. Believe me, I wanted to like this movie more than I did. I think this is one of those movies that would have done better as a book to explain a lot of the things that we didn't need visual representations of.
