Heathers
I'm doing it people...I am calling Heathers a horror movie. The main reason is because it is obviously dark and does include violence. I would definitely consider this to be more of a psychological horror kind of like Donnie Darko, but I think there are a lot of people out there that don't consider this a horror film. That's ok! This movie had a lot of themes to it. I think one of the biggest themes is how the same exact thing can be seen in different shades. Let me explain. The beginning theme song and the song at the credits are the same, but different moods. Veronica herself is part of the popular "Heathers" crowd; however, she is like a different shade. Even the "suicides" in the movie are seen in different lights. If a popular girl commits "suicide" in the film, it is seen as a trending act, and everyone talks highly of her. If the unpopular girl from school does the same exact act, she is ridiculed and accused of trying to be like the popular girls when she was probably the most depressed. Then there is the extreme polarity of the social spectrum and wanting to be loved by people. The Heathers obviously seek external validation to feel loved, but JD seeks the same thing but kills people because of his pain. Another main theme in this film is that, like JD said, the school is society. It shows how engulfing these social structures are in American high school and how it can mold not only an individual, but groups and eventually waves of people. It really showed the ripple effect of trauma and influence. This is one of those movies that if I really dove deep into the underlying messages, I would be writing a freaking novel so I am stopping it while I can. I don't remember if I have ever seen this movie all the way through, so it was good to recently give this a watch.
Prime rating: 4.7 out of 5 stars
My rating: 3.9 out of 5 stars (idk why I can't put this in the 4/5 star category...not that it isn't good, it is just not a movie I feel like I have to show people).
