The Ritual

I have been meaning to watch this move for a long time now and I finally got around to it. I really liked it! I mean I think Luke is super annoying and didn't really like that he was the only one to survive the group trip, but I did like the ending.  I mean the beginning was good and I feel like I say I like the endings of movie quite a bit haha. The story goes - 5 friends want to do a trip together and one of the friends is brutally murdered when getting liquor with someone in the friend group. Luke didn't help his friend and watched him die in front of him. The group decides to go on an outdoor retreat at the place the friend recommended they go and it is not a good time. The vibes are obviously off as everyone is sad about their friend and then one of the guys injures his leg (and we all know how that ends lol). Our little group decides to take a "shortcut" through the woods to get to their motel or whatever and that is when shit goes down. First, the group starts having really bad nightmares and find weird markings on the trees. Then they see bodies in the trees and there are scenes that show glimpses of a huge monster lurking in the very woods they are going through. The crew is eventually killed off one by one until Luke and one other guy from the group are the only ones left. They are introduced to a group of really old looking people that appear to be worshippers of the monster that had been residing in the woods. This creature is a Yotun and looks like a huge horse with a head made of 2 bodies that have been twisted and mutilated. One has a hood with glowing eyes that controls the minds of its victims and the other has no head and looks to be a body that had been sacrificed. Luke finds that he is chosen based on the marking on his chest. The other guy is taking outside where he hallucinates his wife as he is mauled by the creature. Luke makes a run for it and is only able to escape because he was actually able to face his fear and fight the monster. Because he no longer was a victim to his own pain and fear the monster felt no use of him I guess....it apparently only wants followers who are writhing in pain and suffering. The movie obviously has a lot of analogies for facing trauma while mixing in some cool creature feature effects. This movie was very approachable and did a great job with keeping the pace and not becoming too dull. Horror movies that deal with trauma can be a bit drawn out and slow (well, maybe not the Smile movies lol) and this one was not stagnant at all.

IMDb rating: 6.3 out of 10 stars (I actually expected a little higher)

My rating: 8.1 out of 10 stars (lots of cool elements in the movie and I liked the story)
