Hokum

Ah, another story about a writer who hasn't processed their trauma, but I freaking loved this movie. I liked it a lottt more than I thought I would! I don't the story was thatttt original, however, the jump scares and the cinematography made up for it. Adam Scott plays this character named Ohm who we see from the very beginning is disturbed and already has spirits attracted to him. He decides to go to a hotel that is near a tree where he wants to spread his parent's ashes. He learns that the honeymoon suite (where his parents stayed) is haunted after talking to the hotel staff. Ohm proceeds to be a dick throughout the night as he drinks and eventually tries to kill himself. He is saved by a staff member who had a bad feeling about something going on (literally finds him hanging from the ceiling). Once he is all better, he goes back to the hotel to talk to her and thank her but can't find her. He proceeds to go to the Honeymoon suite with Mal (is that his name?) where he finds the girl in the lift...dead. Mal locks him in the room where he struggles to try to find his way out for the majority of the rest of the film. We find out that Mal had gotten the girl pregnant and killed her since he had a wife. We also find out that the witch who was described earlier resides (or at least spends a lot of time) down in the basement of the hotel. He is met with a number of spirits and weird things going on in the hotel as he tries to escape and ironically the person who he thought had killed Fiona (that's her name!...I think) ended up helping him out. Mal ends up killing him and starts hunting Ohm until Ohm takes the keys and forces Mal to come down to the basement to get them. Oh, and the hotel is on fire at this point because Mal is just the worst and wants to get rid of the evidence. He saved by the guy who really didn't like him as Mal is dragged into a room of hungry looking demons and Ohm only escaping due to his ghost mom providing a file to escape his shackles. I feel like that was a huge run-on sentence lol. Now, what is interesting about this film is that we find out at the very end that the bell boy had spiked his drink with shrooms after Ohm was such a dick to him. He really was lol he flat out just burned him. So for parts of this movie, he is tripping and dealing with the guilt of killing his mother accidently while he actually being tormented by the witch and spirits. He is only set free when he says that he is sorry and it was an accident. Man, that donkey scene STILL remains in my head. So many good creepy or flat-out startling moments in this movie. I think this movie should definitely be seen in theaters to get the full effect of the scares. Seriously one of the best horror movies I've seen this year.

IMDb rating: 7.3 out of 10 stars

My rating: 9.7 out of 10 stars (as I said I loved this movie! Very little I would have changed or wanted more of).
