House
Now THIS is a funky movie. As I am writing this, I am watching people play the new remake of Ocarina of Time on Twitch and I want to play so bad :( I am also pretty sick still but want to watch a horror movie tonight and I feel like I have to review the ones I have watched in order to keep going on my horror movie journey. Let's start with the things I really liked about the movie. Obviously, the unique backdrops giving this movie a really trippy art style (along with the special effects) gave this movie such a memorable distinction among other horror movies that have to do with haunted buildings. I loved the girl group and that everyone had very literal personalities that were just hokey overall but gave some charm when they banded together. I also liked some of the funny kills like Melody getting eaten by the piano. Not to mention Mac's head being found in the well and biting (Kung Fu's?) ass. The whole story revolves around the main girl (Gorgeous, of course) who finds out that her dad has finally moved on and found another woman. She does not want to move in with them, so she takes the invitation from the cat (Blanche?) to go to her aunt's house. She invites like 7 of her friends (not an inconvenience at all) and that is where the fun begins. Things are certainly weird in the house and gets even weirder when Gorgeous becomes possessed by the spirit of her aunt as she is playing dress up with her makeup and jewelry. Her aunt's lover (fiancé?) was killed in war and she never moved on from him, so the house harbors her intense feelings of pain and bitterness towards women who got to bear children and marry the men they loved. Her spirit has remained in the house which the house itselfffff uses as an energy source. Her spirit also has an appetite for young, unmarried women who she then eats up. We find out that the aunt has been dead this whole time and the cat has been used as a vessel to bring Gorgeous and her friends there. The very last scene was one I took pretty literally? Like I think Gorgeous's new mom literally burst into flames after being entranced into the house. Like the house just took her? I think that scene is up to debate. One could argue that her presence is Gorgeous's life is no longer relevant and she has severed that tie (or burned that bridge lol) and she will remain in the house as the new host? I think she set her on fire (or the spirit/house did) to take her energy and essence of her. Oh, I never said what I didn't like. Ok, they did not need to have so much nakedness with these young girls in the movie. Also, I knowwww that the over-the-top acting is why many people loved this movie but man, that was a lot to get through haha. The main gripe is the sexualization of young girls in a few of the scenes but what else is new.
IMDb rating: 7.2 out of 10 stars
My rating: 7.5 out of 10 stars. As mentioned, I had some gripes, but the movie definitely had a charm and unforgettable style to it.
